Wings of Glass

The Garmin struggles to pick up the GPS signal. It’s always a bit of a hassle: you’re there, ready for your workout, feeling rushed because your break time is ticking away, but it just won’t lock onto the satellites. Still, it’s a good chance to do some stretching and enjoy the music playing through your earbuds.

Under the dappled light filtering through the pines, one of those songs from my erratic playlist reaches my ears, resurfacing after an indeterminate amount of time. Maybe a lot, maybe just a little, but today, I feel it more. There are moments when a series of tiny, seemingly insignificant events align, resonating with one another to create something unique, small epiphanies. And when one of those songs happens to fit into that moment, it triggers a cascade of thoughts, like a domino effect.

Don’t ask me to define what those songs are, I wouldn’t know how to explain it. But they exist on the same wavelength as the deepest part of me. They form the ideal soundtrack to the flow of my thoughts. The song in this particular alignment is called Wings of Glass: its lyrics are partly in Icelandic, partly in French. Not exactly ideal for me. And yet, from the very first time I heard it, its melody and harmonies captivated me. Today is no different; if anything, they stir my imagination even more.

What intrigues me most is the image evoked by its title: wings of glass. Wings symbolize lightness, fragility, but at the same time, potential boundless heights, distant horizons. The fact that they’re made of glass makes them even more delicate, ephemeral. And maybe that’s what makes the image even more beautiful, because perhaps beauty lies in transience, in impermanence. Isn’t it the fleeting nature of sunrises and sunsets that makes them so special? Isn’t it the rarity of an encounter with a wild animal that makes that moment unique? Isn’t it the elusiveness of the northern lights that makes witnessing them so precious? Isn’t it the fragile and rare balance of love that makes it so essential in our lives?

And yet, these moments can be pursued, sought, found with the right spirit, with perseverance, with the relentless beating of wings. It is through the immense power of fragility that we can rise and reach those moments that make life worth living. It is by facing our fears, even when we feel unprepared, fragile in fact, that we can earn these flashes of pure happiness: the courage to become parents, the fortune of feeling a tiny hand grasping ours, the audacity to meet a gaze and capture a fleeting smile, the strength to set aside pride and apologize, the power to say everything with a simple embrace, the boldness to chase love when we find it.

I try to carry this perspective with me on every hike, hoping to find the unique warmth of these moments and capture it through my lens, an attempt (perhaps beyond me) to crystallize it in the cold heart of a sensor. Probably a fragile attempt, but that’s precisely what makes it irresistible.

Meanwhile, the song has ended, and I’ve already run almost two laps. Now, I’m running against the sunlight, and in this exact moment, the light filtering through the trees washes over me in beams reminiscent of those you see when swimming underwater, looking up toward the surface. It lasts only a second, a brief instant, but a beautiful one.
